Commodore OS Vision 3.0: A Retro-Futuristic Revival for Enthusiasts and Creators

On April 22, 2025, Commodore OS Vision 3.0 was officially released, marking a significant milestone for retro computing fans and Linux enthusiasts alike. This fan-made, free-to-download Linux distribution, developed by Leo Nigro, serves as the default operating system for Commodore-branded machines like the Commodore 64x, available from MyRetroComputer.com.

A Nostalgic Yet Modern Experience

Commodore OS Vision 3.0 is based on Debian Bookworm and offers a unique blend of retro aesthetics with modern functionality. It features a retro-inspired Settings Manager for configuring ROMs, emulation, startup options like animated wallpapers and retro jingles, and more.

A Gaming Powerhouse

Touted as the largest games-oriented Linux distribution ever produced, Commodore OS Vision 3.0 includes over 200 free Linux-compatible games, along with a selection of classic Commodore games and demos. This extensive library is designed to cater to both nostalgic gamers and new users seeking a rich gaming experience.

Introducing Commodore OS BASIC V1

A standout feature of this release is Commodore OS BASIC V1, a modern BASIC implementation that supports 3D graphics, built-in sprites, tilemaps, 2D and 3D physics, and user-defined types. Future development aims to enable compiling software for original C64 and Amiga hardware, making it an ideal platform for retro game development.

Commodore OS Central: A Hub for Users

Commodore OS Central is a new resource hub designed to serve Commodore OS users. It aims to provide manuals and other retro-oriented resources, with ongoing development towards becoming a game installer, store, and launcher that includes community interaction.

A Brief History

Commodore OS Vision was initially developed by Commodore USA in 2010, intended for use on their range of PCs like the Commodore 64x. The first public beta version was released on November 11, 2011, based on Linux Mint and using the GNOME 2 desktop environment. After Commodore USA became defunct in 2013, the project was revived by Leo Nigro, leading to the release of version 2.0 on December 13, 2023, and now version 3.0 in 2025.
