What’s New in the Intel Xeon Scalable Fifth Generation?

  • by

Intel’s latest generation server processors, codenamed Emerald Rapids, introduce several innovations and improvements compared to the current fourth generation.

  1. Increased L3 cache capacity and higher DDR5 memory speed
  2. Enhanced Intel 7 manufacturing process
  3. Up to 64 cores/128 threads
  4. Full support for CXL 3.0 (Compute Express Link) devices
  5. Improved performance-enhancing accelerators and AI acceleration optimization
  6. Enhanced security features
  7. Focus on performance/watt optimization

After facing shipping problems and delays with the previous generation, Intel promises much faster delivery to distributors and end-users this time. These CPUs could hit the open server market even before the end of the year.

Leading technology company Supermicro has also announced future support and the possibility of remote testing for the 5th generation Intel Xeon Scalable in the Jump Start program. As a system integrator, Supermicro can assist you in this program. Additionally, within the Early Ship Program, it is possible to ship complete servers with the 5th generation before the official launch.

Another advantage is that there is no need to purchase new servers, as the new generation uses the same socket (Socket 4677) as its predecessor. This provides a quick and easy way to enhance the performance of existing servers. Supermicro not only relies on already available servers but continuously releases new, enhanced models, enabling these processors to reach their maximum potential. According to Intel, this new processor generation will be the last in the current sockets before transitioning to the much larger Birch Stream platform, including Granite Rapids (P-core 2024), Sierra Forest (E-core 2024), and Clearwater Forest (E-core 2025).

In summary, the Intel Xeon Scalable fifth generation brings numerous innovations and improvements, offering significant performance growth and new possibilities for server users.
