Fortnite on Linux: Release Date, Requirements and Which Distros Will Work

Short answer: Epic Games confirmed on October 14, 2026 that Fortnite is coming to Linux, but there’s no release date yet. It will launch through the new Epic Games Launcher (Linux preview), and it will need a Linux setup with Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 and a signed kernel. The Steam Deck is not supported at launch.

What Epic announced

Epic is rebuilding its Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) system for Linux as EAC Linux v2. The older Linux version has been around since 2014 (Windows games via Wine/Proton since 2021), but each game had to opt in and many didn’t, because the protection was weaker than on Windows. That’s why Fortnite never came to Linux.

The plan:

  1. Epic pilots EAC Linux v2 in Fortnite first.
  2. Once it works with enough Linux distributions, Fortnite launches through the Epic Games Launcher, which now has a Linux preview.
  3. Epic then opens the new anti-cheat to other developers, so more multiplayer games could follow.

Epic says it will not bring Fortnite to Steam.

Does it install a kernel driver?

No. On Windows, Epic’s anti-cheat relies on a kernel driver. EAC Linux v2 doesn’t load a kernel module. Instead it uses security features already in Linux, along with a systemd service and eBPF programs. The service only runs while a protected game is open.

EAC Linux v2 system requirements

Your system has to meet all of these when you start a protected game:

RequirementWhat it means
Signed kernel and modulesSigned with a key Epic recognizes
TPM 2.0Enabled in BIOS/UEFI
Secure BootEnabled, using only well-known keys
Measured bootPresent by default with systemd-boot and GRUB
IOMMUEnabled in BIOS and kernel, passthrough disabled
Kernel lockdown (integrity mode)Enabled at boot
kexecDisabled at boot
BPF LSMLoaded and active

Epic expects these requirements to change over time, so recheck before launch day.

Which distros are on the approved key list?

Epic’s initial list of trusted Secure Boot keys covers:

  • Ubuntu and derivatives such as Linux Mint
  • Fedora and derivatives
  • Bazzite, Bluefin, Aurora (Universal Blue)
  • Debian
  • openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise
  • Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux

Distros outside the list, including Arch-based ones, aren’t ruled out forever. Epic is asking maintainers to get in touch and plans to expand the list, but today they’d need work to qualify.

NVIDIA owners: out-of-tree kernel modules, with NVIDIA’s driver as the named example, must also be signed with a well-known key. Self-signed DKMS or akmod modules enrolled with your own key probably won’t qualify, so check how your distro handles NVIDIA signing.

Can I play on the Steam Deck?

Not yet. The Steam Deck doesn’t support the features EAC Linux v2 requires. Epic says it’s talking with Valve but has given no timeline.

Check your PC today

These commands show whether your system meets the main requirements:

bash

# Secure Boot
mokutil --sb-state

# TPM 2.0 (should print 2)
cat /sys/class/tpm/tpm0/tpm_version_major

# Kernel lockdown (look for [integrity] or [confidentiality])
cat /sys/kernel/security/lockdown

# BPF LSM (output should include "bpf")
cat /sys/kernel/security/lsm

# kexec (1 = disabled)
sysctl kernel.kexec_load_disabled

# IOMMU
ls /sys/kernel/iommu_groups | head

Don’t worry if some fail. Settings like lockdown and kexec can be changed with kernel boot parameters, and Epic confirmed you can keep a separate boot entry just for protected games, leaving your normal setup untouched. Failing the checks only shows an error message and won’t get you banned.

What this means for Linux gaming

  • Good news: Linux gaming gets a path to some of the biggest online games, which anti-cheat has blocked until now.
  • Trade-off: The security requirements are stricter than Proton gaming has needed so far. Expect extra setup, especially if you use a custom kernel or self-signed drivers.
  • Open question: Whether other developers, such as those behind games that never enabled Linux support, switch on EAC Linux v2.

FAQ

Is Fortnite available on Linux now?
No. Epic has confirmed it but hasn’t announced a date.

Will Fortnite work through Proton or Steam?
Epic says it plans to ship through the Epic Games Launcher, not Steam.

Do I need to dual-boot Windows?
Not if your distro and hardware meet the requirements. Windows remains the fallback until launch.

Will my account get banned if my setup isn’t compatible?
No. According to Epic, you’ll just see an error message.

Does EAC Linux v2 work on a laptop?
Yes, if the laptop has TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a distro with a signed kernel. Most laptops from the last few years qualify.
