Audacity 3.4 Beta1 Released with Exciting Features and Improvements

  • by

Audacity, the powerful, free, open-source, cross-platform audio editing software, has released version 3.4 Beta1 for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows systems. This latest stable version introduces new effects, enhancements, and bug fixes, providing users with an even more efficient and feature-rich experience.

According to the project’s release page, the new version includes several music-related features, such as the ability to toggle between hh:mm:ss time and Beats & Measures. Additionally, the release introduces time-stretching clips, allowing clips to be adjusted to the tempo of the song.

For the Time Stretching feature, users can hold down the “Alt” key (macOS: Option) while hovering the mouse pointer over the upper third of the clip edge for stretching. Version 3.4.0 also includes a new export dialog, providing easier access to options like sample rate and custom mapping (for 5.1 or 7.1 audio). The “Browse” button now utilizes the native file browser, making it convenient for frequent export setting adjustments.

Other notable enhancements include:

  • Always using Joint Stereo mode for MP3.
  • Simplified pasting logic and variations for stereo tracks.
  • Adoption of Conan 2.
  • Built-in Opus support.
  • Stability improvements.

Installation options include an AppImage version, recommended for use even though it’s a beta release. While stable, it’s advisable to avoid native installation.

For full release notes, you can visit the project’s GitHub page and download Audacity 3.4 Beta1 as an AppImage from the official website. The AppImage allows running Audacity on practically any GNU/Linux distribution without the need for installation.
