SkyOS 5 – Independent Retro Operating System

  • by

SkyOS, short for Sky Operating System, was a discontinued prototype, commercial, and proprietary graphical desktop operating system developed for the x86 computer architecture.

Development came to a halt on January 30, 2009, with no plans for a restart. In August 2013, the developer, Robert Szeleney, announced the release of a public beta version on the SkyOS website. This allowed users to download a SkyOS operating system Live CD for testing and optional system installation.

The development journey began in 1996, and the initial version was released in December 1997. Until version 4.x, the operating system was freely available. However, with the commencement of SkyOS 5 beta development in 2003, users had to pay $30 for access to beta versions. SkyOS introduced a new file system, SkyFS, based on OpenBFS.

The graphical system underwent further development in 2006, supporting desktop compositing, including double buffering and transparency. The operating system also transitioned to ELF binaries at this time. The last beta version, version 6947, was released in August 2008, and there were no updates for several months regarding its status.

As the operating system was primarily the work of Robert Szeleney, adding new device drivers became increasingly challenging. Given the lack of development under Szeleney’s guidance, the technology press suggested that the best option for SkyOS might have been to become open-source. Despite Szeleney’s attempts to address the lack of device drivers with a new kernel based on Linux or NetBSD, and reporting some progress in this regard, development did not resume.

The SkyOS website disappeared in 2013, and shortly after, the final public version from August 2008 became freely available.

Porting Applications

Many command-line applications compiled with the GNU Toolchain can be ported to SkyOS with little or no modification.

SkyOS included several frameworks for creating applications, including a port of Mono. Transferred applications included Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Nvu, GIMP, and AbiWord.
