Nitrux Unleashes a Fresh Linux Experience with Latest Immutable Release

  • by

The Linux world is buzzing with excitement as Nitrux drops its latest ISO release, marking a promising start to 2024. For those in the know, this is one Linux distro that demands a test run! This edition brings enhancements to network and password security, introduces a new tiling window manager, and updates various components.

Nitrux 3.2.1: What’s Under the Hood?

Uri Herrera has officially rolled out the Nitrux 3.2.1 edition, signaling its availability for eager users. It’s the first ISO snapshot of the year for this systemd-free, Debian-based, and immutable GNU/Linux distribution, built around the KDE Plasma desktop environment.

Powered by the Liquorix Linux 6.6.9 LTS kernel, Nitrux 3.2.1 boasts the latest KDE Plasma 5.27.10 LTS desktop environment, complemented by KDE Frameworks 5.114 and KDE Gear 23.08.4 software packages. The foundation rests on the long-term supported Qt 5.15 LTS application framework.

What’s New in Nitrux 3.2.1

Beyond the usual driver and software updates, this edition caters to those installing this systemd-free distribution with an upgraded Calamares graphical installer. Now, it includes a checkbox allowing users to disable the default password strength check—a feature worth noting. However, it’s crucial to use a secure password once the installation goes live!

Additionally, Nitrux 3.2.1 introduces several changes to the KDE Plasma-based NX Desktop environment, such as the Cover Switch effect for window switching, a new option enabling users to restart the KWin X11 session, improved logging for disk space conservation, a new help section, updated themes, and enhanced fractional scaling.

Fresh Additions and Enhancements

This release incorporates new components like the minimal WebDAV server Phodav, the Plasma Gamemode extension, the upstream RNG-Tools random number generator daemon, SPICE agent for Linux enabling remote access to virtual machines, PWGen for automatic password generation, and a PAM module for password strength checking.

For graphics enthusiasts, Nitrux 3.2.1 includes the KDE Wacom Tablet KCModule, offering a graphical interface for Wacom Linux Drivers, allowing profile support for managing different button or pen layouts.

Network Security Boost

In a bid to enhance network security, Nitrux 3.2.1 enables random MAC address assignment by default in NetworkManager. Additionally, it adopts the IPv6 Privacy Extensions standard (RFC 4941) by default in NetworkManager and the Linux kernel.

Download and Upgrade

The Nitrux 3.2.1 ISO snapshot is available for download on the official website or by following the direct download link provided. Remember, this initial snapshot in 2024 is tailored for new installations, and existing users should upgrade their installations using the Nitrux Upgrade.
